Lake Oswego & Portland OR
As oral health professionals, it is always our goal to save natural teeth when possible. However, for many people, the reality is that someday they will need to have an adult tooth extracted. If your tooth hurts or you have been told you need extraction, please call our office. Oral surgeons have extensive training in tooth extractions, from the simplest to the most complex, and can minimize any possible risks while protecting the health of your jawbone.
Common Reasons for Tooth Extraction
- Tooth Decay
- Periodontal Disease
- Broken Teeth/Fractures
- Orthodontic Preparation
- Impacted Teeth
Bone Grafting after Extraction
As soon as a tooth is extracted, the jawbone begins to recede, making it difficult to place an implant and negatively affecting the aesthetics of the face. To avoid this inevitable complication, we recommend placing bone grafting material at the same time as extraction. This will allow you to have a dental implant in the future if you choose, and also preserve your health and facial aesthetics.
Tooth Extractions: What to Expect
Tooth extractions are performed under local anesthesia, and we also offer additional anesthesia options for those who want a more relaxing experience. The procedure itself is pain-free and typically takes less than an hour. Results and recovery from extraction are safe and predictable. Any post-procedure soreness is usually adequately controlled with over-the-counter medications.
Home Care After Tooth Extraction
It is most important after tooth extraction to protect the blood clot that forms after surgery. Do not use straws, smoke, or rinse vigorously for several days. Start with a liquid diet and gradually increase textured foods as you feel better. Please read home care instructions for after tooth extraction here.
Extractions are nothing to be afraid of – we can give you a safe, calm and comfortable experience in our office.

Geisler Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
Patient Review by Anne S
I am extremely grateful to Dr. Stacy Geisler of Geisler Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in Lake Oswego, OR. I lost a molar crown on New Year’s Eve and by the time that I could obtain an emergency referral to Dr. Geisler four days later, I was in serious pain. Although the remains of the tooth had to be extracted, the surgery was flawless and recovery was quick and successful. Moreover, Dr Geisler is such a delightful, caring person and I am really very sorry that (hopefully) I will not be seeing her often again. You know that you’ve found a treasure when you anticipate visiting your oral surgeon!
