PRP Therapy for TMJ in Lake Grove & Lake Oswego

At Geisler OMS, we provide the highest level of care with evidence-based oral surgery and treatment. If you suffer from TMJ, a disorder that causes pain in the bone and muscles that control your jaw, Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy is a safe, affordable, and effective treatment option to manage your symptoms.

What is TMJ?

TMJ is a term used to describe Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, a dysfunction of the joint that acts as a hinge, linking your jaw to your skull. TMJ can be caused by genetic or environmental factors, such as trauma or injury.

What is PRP?

PRP therapy is a minimally invasive treatment used for a variety of oral surgical procedures, such as onlay and inlay grafts, sinus lift procedures, ridge augmentation procedures, closure of cleft and/or lip, palate defects, and TMJ.

For TMJ, Dr. Geisler uses the patient’s own platelet-rich blood that is rich in proteins, PDGF, VEGF, TGF-Beta, FGF, and IGF-1 to speed up the muscular healing process by injecting it in targeted areas of the jaw. PRP is high in concentration of autologous, bioactive, regenerative, and natural growth factors, making it natural and effective in treating muscle and joint dysfunction. PRP allows us to use normal healing pathways quickly, accelerating the growth of new tissue and growth.

Is PRP effective in TMJ disorder treatment?

Yes, we have seen a significant reduction in pain within the first year of PRP treatment. And PRP is often used to treat musculoskeletal sports injuries. Studies have shown PRP to be effective in repairing chronically injured jaws, returning the jaw to its original level of function, and improving mandibular range of motion.

PRP as Evidence-Based Therapy

To administer a PRP treatment, Dr. Geisler collects a small amount of the patient’s blood and spins it in a centrifuge to separate the platelets from the red blood cells, white blood cells, and plasma. She injects platelets, a component of blood that plays a role in injury and degenerative healing, into the jaw.
