Jaw surgery, or orthognathic surgery, is one of the most complex forms of oral surgery performed. Dr. Geisler is an exceptional oral surgeon with years of experience performing orthognathic surgery.

Orthognathic Surgery Presentation

To provide you with a better understanding of orthognathic surgery, we have provided the following multimedia presentation. Many common questions pertaining to orthognathic surgery are discussed.

When is Jaw Surgery Needed?

Jaw surgery ensures the teeth meet correctly. If the top and bottom of the jaw don’t meet correctly or the teeth do not fit properly in the jaw, orthognathic surgery may be needed to reposition the jaw. It is often performed in conjunction with orthodontal work, such as braces to straighten the teeth. The result is a more attractive appearance and improved function.

The upper and lower jaws mature and grow separately, which can lead to various health problems that negatively affect your ability to chew, speak, and smile. You may benefit from jaw surgery if your jaw is positioned incorrectly or your bite does not meet properly. If the issue is severe, you may also experience pain or temporomandibular joint problems.

Indications You May Need Orthognathic Surgery

  • Speech problems
  • Difficulty biting, chewing, or swallowing
  • Chronic jaw pain or headaches
  • TMJ Disorder
  • A protruding jaw or underbite
  • Breathing difficulties

Some individuals are born with jaw anomalies due to environmental influences or a hereditary condition. Others may develop jaw problems as their facial bones mature and grow. Trauma to the face can also shift the jaw out of alignment.

A Compassionate Approach to Jaw Surgery

Dr. Geisler and her patient care team understand that facing orthognathic surgery can feel overwhelming. Their goal is to ensure your orthognathic surgery journey goes smoothly. Dr. Geisler works closely with each patient’s orthodontist and any other medical professionals needed to complete your jaw rehabilitation seamlessly and with minimal disruption to your daily life.

At your initial consultation, Dr. Geiser performs a complete oral exam and takes x-rays. She explains the surgery in detail and welcomes patient questions. After discussing your options, you and Dr. Geisler can decide whether to proceed with the surgery. If orthodontic care is needed, Dr. Geisler will collaborate with your orthodontist to coordinate a treatment plan and timeline.

Dr. Geisler’s commitment to you does not end after surgery. She and her care team follow up with you on the day of surgery and the days that follow, tracking your progress, addressing your concerns, and ensuring you are emotionally supported. You are sent home with a post-op care package, detailed home-care instructions, and access to Dr. Geisler‘s cell phone number.

Technology Improves Jaw Surgery Outcomes

Dr. Geisler advocates the latest technologies to ensure optimal results with every surgery. Orthognathic surgery, in particular, can be improved through computer-aided 3D modeling of the jaw. These images allow Dr. Geisler to formulate a safe and effective approach to your surgery. She can also show you computer images of how you’ll look after surgery. Seeing the end result helps patients understand the necessity of jaw surgery and the amazing results it can achieve.

Understanding Orthognathic Surgery

Corrective jaw surgery is considered a major surgical procedure. It can take months of preparation and healing time. We fully explain the timeline and expectations to our patients to ensure they are prepared. Here are a few things to keep in mind if you are considering jaw surgery:

  • Dr. Geisler performs orthognathic surgery in the hospital. It can take an hour to four hours to complete the surgery.
  • Most patients have to undergo orthodontic treatment before having jaw surgery. They may also have to continue wearing braces for up to a year after.
  • Patients may be off work or out of school for up to a month following jaw surgery.
  • Patients are on a soft diet for several weeks following jaw surgery and may need up to two months before they can chew normally.
  • Full jaw function may not return for several months. Some patients have temporary numbness during this phase.
  • During the first two months, Dr. Geisler will need to see you once a week.
  • Recovery is a long, involved process. While the results can be life-changing, we ask that patients keep the recovery needed in mind.

I want to thank you for the care you have given my friend D. You and your office have been so kind and compassionate to reach out to her with hope and encouragement after she was told my others in Southern Oregon that she could not have teeth. You referral to Dr. Larry Over has been very successful. For the first time since her cancer diagnosis, D. now has hope that she can eat normal foods again. Thank you for all that you do for others and for the professional and loving care that you have extended to my lifelong friend.
